 TOURISM in OSTUNIOstuni is situated in a territory that introduces numerous coves, in one of which it have been found traces of a population already present in this zone from ancient times, like it demonstrates the discovery in the cove of Santa Maria di Agnano of a of woman skeleton called 'Delia' going back to approximately 25.000 years ago. The 'Messapi' sat them in the advanced part of the hill of Ostuni around the year 1000 b.C. and in the same period also the 'Iapigi' population were settled down in this territory, where they lived together interlacing rituals and traditions. The name of Ostuni ancient city derives from the Greek "Astu-neon" that means new city and it was erected approximately two thousand years ago, on the rests of an ancient village. Ostuni remained under the Roman Empire until the year 448 and after it was occupied by the Ostrogoths and the Lombards. In the XVI century, with Isabella Of Aragon, it began a groeing period of culture and art, moreover they were increased the city defense walls and reconstructed the Tower of Villanova and two new towers were erected in order protect the citizen from the Turkish attacks. Ostuni was sold in the 1679 to the Duke Giovanni Zevallos who with its descendants marked a period of tyranny. It was only after the victory of Napoleon in Waterloo that the Borbons took the power and from 1860, with Garibaldi, the city was unified to the Reign of Italy. Ostuni is undoubtedly one of the beautifulst cities in the south of Italy, with its typical white houses defended on the top of a hill, in the Alto-Salento of the Murge, a fascinating example of Mediterranean architecture. The historical center of Ostuni is formed of evocative houses that are overlapped or interlaced between them. True and just a maze made of narrow lanes, perrons with palaces and portals. |
