Montepulciano boasts many illustrious sons like Sant'Agnese, Angelo Poliziano - to the century Agnolo Ambrogini and Pope Marcello II. A beautiful ciity set on the crest of a height between the Val d'Orcia and the Valdichiana, that it was for a along time a Florentine outpost in the Siena enemy territory
In 1390 Montepulciano passed to Florence definitively, from which it would have been detached only during the years of the exile of the Medici.
From 1609 to the 1636 Montepulciano enjoyed a temporary autonomy, under Cristina di Lorena.
The Piazza Grande is indeed an exceptional stage for the international 'Cantiere d'Arte' (yard of art), with the program of the summer theatre review.
On the public square are set many buildings of architectonic artistic interest, to begin from the Palazzo Comunale the Town Hall palace with tower and the crenallated shape that recall the Florentine palace of the 'Signoria'. The extraordinary palace palazzo Nobili-Tarugi covered with 'travertino' and the adjacent one of the Capitano del Popolo the people captain in tiles, forehead to which there is the sink of the Grifi and Lions with its refined renaissance shapes. On the south side of the square, it has remained unfinished the great facade of the Dome of Montepulciano planned by Ippolito Scalza with in the inside are found the Assunzione a 'trittico' painted by Taddeo di Bartolo, theMadonna col Bambino by Sano di Pietro and the lying statue of Bartolomeo Aragazzi a literate and secretary of Martino V, coming from a sepulchral monument made by Michelozzo.
Along the via Ricci the ancient ridge road that encloses the middle ages and renaissance palaces, there is the Ghotic style palace that hosts the Civic Museum and the Pinacoteca with the works of Andrea della Robbia, Margarito d'Arezzo and Girolamo di Benvenuto. To the Siena architect Baldassarre Peruzzi is due the palazzo Ricci with the evocative wine cellars must destined to the Nobile wine of Montepulciano.
The road corsses three city segments named Gracciano, Voltaia and Opio, along which succeed elegant patrician dwellings of the ' 500 like the palazzo Cervini a palace attributed to Antonio from Sangallo - the Young one, and the palazzo Gagnoni-Giugno made by Vignola, to which is also to be report the palazzo Tarugi set on top of a perron with balustrade. The church of Sant'Agostino of the XV century introduces a beautiful facade of the Michelozzo, to whom must also be report the relief of 'terracotta' in the 'lunetta', the facing tower of Pulcinella dating back to 1524 is crowned by an automaton that strikes the hours.
Much green is around to the chiesa di San Biagio in the south of the city and the church is considered the 'capolavoro' a masterpiece of Antonio from Sangallo - the Old one, that it conferred to the construction realized in 'travertino', plant to Greek cross with the two orders crowned by the 'cupola' and the beautifulst renaissance bell tower. Sangallo planned also the contiguous Canonical dwelling completed half century after he died.
